n the heart of bustling Chinatown with all the food around, but without much cash to spare? That’s exactly the problem I encountered when I visited Binondo on a petsa-de-peligro (few days before payday). But I am in a legitimate Chinatown with authentic Chinese cuisine everywhere so how could I possibly go wrong? I knew I just had to find the right place that could satisfy my cravings without me having to spend much. But to my delight, I found more than what I was expecting to find!
I discovered a hole-in-the-wall restaurant that’s so in-the-wall you could have probably passed by it without noticing. It’s located in an apartment complex right in front a busy street. Some might be a little reluctant though because entering the premises might feel a little strange since it’s as if being transported to a distant past. But trust your instincts because the building houses a delicious yet affordable Chinese lumpia that you would remember even days after eating it.
For only 60 pesos per piece, you will get to experience a deliciously healthy lumpia that is evenly matched by a thick sauce that is both savory and sweet. The herbs inside satiate the taste buds as they fill the mouth with rich flavors tasteful enough without being overpowering. The ingredients are so fresh you could still enjoy the crunch of the herbs and vegetables used to fill the core of this lumpia.
It’s healthy, delicious and affordable. What more can I ask for? And let me just reiterate that it’s only 60 pesos but it filled my cravings, as well as the big appetite of my two friends.
It has straightforward interiors with the ambience of everything imaginable in a Chinese eatery. Nonetheless, people would go here for the food. It’s a lumpia that you wouldn’t taste elsewhere so might as well grab the chance.
I am happy I followed my instincts and entered the building where New Po-Heng Lumpia House is located. It costs less, but it sure tastes expensive as far as authenticity is concerned.
Try it too and be the judge. The establishment is open from 7 am to 7 pm. It’s located at 531 Quintin Paredes Street, Brgy. 289 Zone 27, Binondo, Manila. It’s in front of BDO, PhilAm Life and Sterling Bank Asia. Enjoy!
Crazy about popular culture, pre-colonial, and Spanish-era studies. Fan of Christina Aguilera and Katrina Halili.
