DOST-SEI Announces Scholarship Improvements for Graduate and Undergraduate Students

Following its mandate to increase the number of Science and Technology professionals in the country, The DOST-Science Education Institute announced improvements for its undergraduate and graduate sci-tech scholarship programs. The announcement was made by DOST-SEI Director Dr. Josette Biyo during a press conference last week at the Philippine International Convention Center. This is welcome news considering that it was revealed during the National Science and Technology Week 2018.

The improvements include more slots for scholars and increased monthly stipends. The SEI can trace a rising interest for their scholarship programs as proven by the increased number of qualified applicants for the undergraduate program. DOST-SEI reports a record-high 8,994 passing applicants this year alone. With the improved capacity and benefits, they are looking to have over 33,000 scholars by 2019.

Available scholarships for graduate Science and Technology students

Graduate students can choose from three tracks. First off, the Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program hopes to improve the number of sci-tech experts. Qualified ASTHRDP applicants can be placed in related courses at the following universities: University of the Philippines System (Diliman, Manila, Los Baños, Visayas), Ateneo De Manila University, De La Salle University, University of Santo Tomas, University of San Carlos, Visayas State University, and Central Luzon State University.

On the other hand, the Engineering Research for Development and Technology aims to increase the number of engineering practitioners. Qualified applicants may be assigned to courses in the following academic institutions: UP Diliman, UP Los Baños, Ateneo De Manila, De La Salle, Central Luzon State, University of San Carlos, Iligan Institute of Technology, and Mapua Institute of Technology.

Finally, improving the proficiency of Science and Technology educators is the responsibility of the Capacity Building Program in Science and Mathematics Education. Qualified graduate students may be placed in the corresponding universities:  Ateneo De Manila, Bicol University, Central Luzon State, De La Salle – Manila, Iligan Institute of Technology, Mariano Marcos State University, Philippine Normal University, University of San Carlos, West Visayas State University, and Western Mindanao State University. The aforementioned schools are part of the National Consortium in Graduate Science and Mathematics Education.

Benefits of qualified graduate Science and Technology scholars

DOST-SEI graduate scholars who are taking up either a Master’s or Doctorate degree will receive full subsidy of their tuition and miscellaneous fees. They are also entitled to a yearly book allowance of PHP 10,000 as well as Thesis/Dissertation allowance. They can also get a Student Research Support Fund and subsidized fare for one Economy class round-trip plane ticket every year. However, the difference is in the Monthly Living Allowance as Master’s students will receive PHP 25,000 while Doctorate scholars get PHP 33,000.

DOST-SEI undergraduate scholarship

Aside from the scholarship program mandated in Republic Act 7687 or the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994, interested undergraduate students can also apply for scholarship programs under Republic Act 2067 or the Science Act of 1958 as well as Republic Act 10612 or the Junior Level Science Scholarship Program.

Meanwhile, the Junior Level Science Scholarship Program seeks a seamless transition for Engineering, Mathematics and Science graduates to teach the subject matter in secondary schools all over the country. Applicants have until September 14, 2018 to submit the requirements.

Qualifying exams for both scholarship programs will be on October 21, 2018.

Benefits of DOST-SEI undergraduate scholars

Scholars will receive a tuition fee subsidy of up to PHP 40,000 per year and allowance of PHP 7,000 monthly. They will also get a yearly book allowance of PHP 10,000 and uniform allowance of PHP 1,000 that will be released only during their first year. Meanwhile, a PHP 1,000 graduation allowance will be given on the student’s graduating year. Premium group insurance and fare for one Economy round-trip ticket per year is also included.
